STAFF REPORT IBD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take a serious step in stopping illegal sale of mobile phone SIMs in Balochistan. The announcement was made when the CJP, along with two other judges, was listening to a petition related to the unfavorable law and order situation in the province.
The chief justice said that under the law, one customer is allowed to keep 10 different SIMs against one CNIC. However, regardless of PTAs various past actions, the sale of illegal SIMs hasnt come to an end. Therefore, the CJP ordered to practice the mechanism through which only one SIM could be issued against a single CNIC in Baluchistan. Additionally, he said that if any cellular company does not comply with the direction for resolving security issues in the province, its licence will be cancelled.
Analysts believe, if such a practice is adopted later in other provinces, the existing official number of total mobile phone SIMs will come down considerably which is 118 million at the moment.
The telecom authority is awaiting detailed court order, the spokesperson told media when contacted for comment.
