PROF DR BS CHOWDHRY, who was appointed as a Member of the Committee by Aalborg University of Denmark to assess Jose Manuel Gutierrex Lopez PhD thesis on “Interconnection Evaluation And Design Of Future High Performing Transport Networks”, has recently visited Aalborg University Denmark for the conduct of PhD exam. The PhD work of the candidate was mainly about the topological organization of optical transport networks. The researchers Jose Manuel Guitierrex Lopoz has summarized his PhD work as under.

“Communication networks have increasingly become an essential part of our everyday lives. Regarding professional aspects, networks play a key role, in order to efficiently develop economical activities in a fast, secure, and reliable way.

In connection with our private lives, the number of services that are being delivered over the data networks is progressively increasing. Nowadays, it is common to provide TV, data and voice services over the same access connection. Probably in the future, new services will appear, all converging over the same infrastructure. Hence, networks should be planned and designed to provide high performance and high availability in transmissions

The interest is especially increasing regarding optical transport networks, where huge amounts of traffic are continuously traversing their links. Inefficiencies or disruptions on delivering the information become critical at this level, due to the number of simultaneously affected users. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to contribute to the future evolution of transport networks by studying the way they are organized, and how their nodes are interconnected. The thesis covers aspects going from the abstraction of logical organization of networks to the practical perspective of their planning and design. In relation to their logical configuration, regular and organized topologies are presented from a graph theory perspective. The main contribution to this field is the study of several regular topologies in multilevel environments. Patterns are analyzed and equations are given, in order to characterize path parameters such as average hop path distance or diameter, as a function of a number of network attributes.

In addition, and following the new trend of green communications, an analytical model is developed in order to evaluate the CO2 contributions of this type of networks during their lifetime. This approach is based on the Life Cycle Assessment concept. This model lays the first brick in order to consider environmental criteria, when planning the physical interconnection for optical transport networks”.
