PAKISTAN SOCIETY of Computational Science (PSCS) and Pakistan Society of Computational Biology (PSCB) in collaboration with Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) and National Center for Physics (NCP) organized a five-day workshop titled “First National Workshop on Computational Tools” from April 8 – 12 this year at the NCP, Islamabad. This scientific workshop covered the broad area of computational tools being used in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Math, Bioinformatics and related areas. According to the progremme, the first day was dedicated for faculty and students. Over 35 students and faculty talks were presented during the whole event.
The first day was inaugurated by Quran recitation followed by invited guests and keynote speeches in the morning session and faculty/students talks in the afternoon session. Federal Secretary for Education and Training Qamar uz Zaman was the chief guest for the opening ceremony. He was accompanied by QAU Vice Chancellor Dr. Masoom Yasinzai and other high profile dignitaries from academia and national labs. The chief guest and keynote speakers highlighted the importance of the computational science, RandD and its future prospects in Pakistan. The organizing committee, members of PSCB and PSCS announced Summer Scholarships for high school students to promote research activities at school level. The afternoon session covered the oral talks and poster session and three oral talks and posters were selected for best presentation awards. The opening day was attended by about 500 students, faculty members, research scientists and staff members.
There were 8 hands-on workshop sessions from April 9 – 12, two sessions each day – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. All eight different technical sessions covered a broad spectrum of Computational Science including Computational Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Math, Bioinformatics and other related areas. The workshop was attended by about 110 students, faculty members and research scientists from 50 different universities, research centers and institutes. Each session had comprised an hour-long lecture and 2-3 hours hands-on workshop.
Event 1The workshops were conducted by Pakistani high profile scientists from different universities and institutes including Dr. Syed Nasir Shah (NCP), Dr. Nasir Majeed Mirza (PIEAS), Dr. Reaz ud Din (HEJ), Dr. Farzana Ansari, Farukh Jabeen, Anees Ahamd (QAU), Dr. Kamran Haider (LUMS), Dr. Muhammad Ismail (IBGE), Dr. Malik Shoukat Iqbal (NUST) and Dr. Jamil Ahmad (NUST). There were four special talks from Dr. Saleem Rehman (LUMS), Dr. Muhammad Mudassar (Japan) and Dr. Mushtaq Hussain (Glasgow) and Dr. Hafeez Hoorani (CERN).
Chairman Pakistan Science foundation Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Federal Secretary of Information Technology Dr. Zafar Iqbal was the special guest at the event. A detailed description and motives of the workshop were explained by conference secretary Dr. Syed Nasir Shah. The future prospects and programmes were announced including research scholarships for high school students, official announcements of PSCB and PSCS were made, 2nd annual computational science meeting announcement was also made at the closing ceremony. Finally, the best presentation awards were given to students by the chief guest followed by tea session.
This week-long event was not possible without the help of dedicated volunteers who worked day and night round the clock to serve our guests, run the day programme and performed the registration process. They did the amazing job and worked with great passion and commitment during the workshop.
