STAFF REPORT IBD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken a number of measures to control grey traffic and a total of 88 joint raids with the FIA have been carried so far across the country since 2009.


Through these raids, 78 persons including six foreigners were apprehended besides confiscation of a total of 591, illegal gateway equipment, says a press release issued by the authority.


In general grey traffic can be defined as the use of illegal gateway exchanges to bypass the legal gateways and terminate/originate international traffic, through VoIP gateways to avoid applicable taxes and/or regulatory fee.


To curb the menace of grey traffic, the PTA has taken effective measures both technical and regulatory which has resulted in reducing the menace of grey trafficking.


Mobile numbers involved in illegal call termination (grey traffic) are being identified by LEA and Vigilance Directorate PTA and blocked. Consequently, to avoid the loss to national exchequer caused through illegal voice termination same are being blocked through concerned operators. A total of 77,352 SIMs identified by Vigilance Directorate PTA and 83, 392 by LEAs and accordingly blocked on respective networks.
