STAFF REPORT KHI: Oceanologists and fisheries experts are of the view that climate change coupled with increasing level of water pollution is making way for a decrease in fish population, and in such conditions, aquaculture can be a great source to fulfill the fish requirements of the country.

They said that at a recently held two-day PAFS annual conference “Aquaculture and Fisheries Development: Opportunities and Challenges” organised by Karachi University Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (KU-ORIC) in collaboration.

According to them, Pakistan has great potential for aquaculture, but due to a lack of knowledge, scientific research in the sector, water pollution, and unsustainable fisheries this sector is neglected.

Director KU-HEC-ORIC Professor Shahana Urooj Kazmi, while introducing the conference theme highlighted the enormous opportunities and challenges and also talked about the activities of Karachi University KU-ORAC.

Prof. Gleyn Bledsoe, University of Idaho (USA) emphasised that aquaculture and fishery society should be made self-sufficient, and a yearly conference should be organised to bring industry and researchers together.
