STAFF REPORT ISB: The Blackberry Enterprise Services (BES) in Pakistan will be stopped due to its non-detectable conversation that is unable to decode by the law enforcement and security agencies. This was announced by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) this week.

The spokesperson of PTA affirmed that PTA had directed telecommunication companies to stop offering BES services from Nov 30, 2015″.

It is noteworthy that the user base of BES has declined with the advent of Android based services in last couple of years and only a maximum of 5000 people use BES services in Pakistan.

The PTA Spokesperson clarified that Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) would remain operational.

Similarly, the Blackberry phones, with just voice and SMS facility will also be available and only BES will be stripped.

The conversation on BES is undetectable for security agencies and hence keeping in view the stringent anti-terrorism policies of incumbent government the decision was made to reduce the vulnerability of any potential mishap that may occur due to misuse of the service.

The National Action Plan to vipe out terrorism in Pakistan also included blocking of non-registered SIMs. Similarly, this action can be considered parallel to the same activity because BES communication cannot conveniently be scanned.
