STAFF REPORT ISB: Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) held a sublime event in wake of World Science Day (WSD-2015) which is celebrated every year across the globe on November 10. This years theme for WSD was Science for Sustainable Future. The purpose of celebrating this event was to mark the global solidarity for promotion of science and technology in order to create sustainable environments and combat with challenges for a prosperous and safer world.


Dr Muhammad Ashraf, PSF in his address during the inaugural session of the event said, “Every year PSF celebrates this event with utmost passion and resolve for science promotion being a premier organization for science popularization. The science education must be enhanced in the country and rural communities must be reached; PSF is putting serious efforts in collaboration with UNESCO and other partner organizations to develop science education infrastructure in rural and far flung areas”.


“It is an important time for all of us to practically take measures against noxious challenges to which we are posed to like biodiversity reduction, climate change, food security, and energy. It is pertinent to mention science and technological development is the only way we can head towards sustainable future”, he added.


Vibeke Jensen, Director UNESCO also graced the occasion with her presence. She said, “Science Day helps all of us to refresh our ambitions of boosting science and technology education all over the world especially in the vulnerable developing nations like Pakistan. The cross disciplinary approach and more research will enable us to hone for better and sustainable development. It is one of core objectives of UNESCO to create a scientifically literate society and is working closely with the vulnerable communities for suggesting improved policies for sustainable future”.


Secretary MoST, Fazal Abbas Maken in his address stressed on need of reorienting the scientific practices in accordance with the social needs in order to maximize the impact of science and technology on the society in general and this way our scientific organizations can take momentous grants from national and international donors.


The other speakers included renowned Professor of National Centre of Physics and Member National Advisory Scientific Council, Prof Dr Aslam Baig, President ECOSF, Dr Manzoor Hussain Soomro, and Consultant COMSTECH, SKT Naeem.


In the concluding session the winners of different competitions arranged by PSF including poster competition, essay competition were awarded with medals and certificates.


The partner organizations for this event were Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF).
