ALL PROVINCES PLEDGE TO SUPPORT FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS

Staff Report ISD: Federal Minister for Climate Change Mushahid Ullah Khan was overwhelmed with support from all provincial governments in implementation of first climate change policy in the country which was approved in 2012.
.First meeting on the implantation of Climate Change policy was held at the Ministry of Climate Change which was presided by Mushahid Ullah Khan. Elite representatives and focal persons of all provinces including Azad Jammu Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan attended the meeting. Provincial representatives ensured their full support to federal government in order to cope with challenges pertaining to climate change.
The outcome of the meeting was highly productive as all provinces, AJK and GB governments agreed to establish and notify provincial climate change policy implementation committees which will be headed by additional chief secretaries.
The provincial government will be obliged to notify to the climate change ministry about their progress “on priority policy actions as proposed in the national climate change implementation framework” withinnext 30 days. Each province will sharetheir execution plans to manifest how they will implement the short-term and priority policy actions togetherwith financing mechanism; the provinces shall send climate change adaptation and mitigation project proposals by no later than May 5, 2015 forwarding on to the Green Climate Fund (operating entity of the financial mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) established in 2010) for consideration before.
The climate change ministry also urged that climate change sections could be established in the federalplanningcommission and provincial planning and development departments for smooth coordination between the federal and provincial governments on climate change-related matters.
Mushahid Ullah Khan said that the federal government alone cannot counter with implications of the climate change without collective support. All provincial governments and AJandK government have to be on the same page for this purpose.
The minister emphasized on the private sector to step forward in this national combat against climate change. “There are many countries in the world which are successfully reducing their climate-vulnerabilities and the private sector has played a vibrant role in this regard,” the minister argued.
Similarly, the private sector in Pakistan needs to be vibrant for boosting governments efforts aimed at tackling countrys climate-vulnerability, he added.
