Biotechnology imperative for agri sector uplifting: Speakers

STAFF REPORT ISB: An international conference focusing on “Agriculture, food security, and biotechnology” was held. The objectives of the conference were to highlight the advancements in the field of biotechnology and its significance for development of agriculture sector and mitigation of food security challenges.


The conference provided a platform for researchers and professionals to exchange the information and discuss the adaptation of latest biotechnologies in order to improve the food security situation as well as ensure uplifting of agri sector.


Dr. Mohamed Hashem, Vice President for Research Affairs and International Relations, NRC in his inaugural speech lauded the initiative of the conference for addressing key regional and global issues related to agriculture and food security.


Amr Abdel-Meguid, Regional Programme Manager CEDARE, said that biotechnology was the prime technology of the 21st century. He said that agriculture biotechnology has plenty of opportunities to offer for national development particularly for developing countries.


Senior Assistant Director (Programmes) COMSATS, Dr. I. E. Qureshi, Executive Director COMSATS, considered the event was imperative in boosting debate and exchange of ideas culture related to modern biotechnological approaches to meet sustainable agriculture and food security challenges in the developing world.


Salah El Din El Gafrawi, ISESCO Representative in Egypt, stressed on researchers to play their vital role in order to uphold advance agricultural systems in Islamic countries.


The event was jointly organized by Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO). The participants from other organizations such as National Research Centre (NRC), Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) also attended the event.
