STAFF REPORT ISB: State Minister for Education, Baligh-ur-Rehman has informed the Senate that the total funds allocated by the Higher Education Commission to Public Sector universities for research purpose during last five years were Rs 2.50 billion.

He said that the Higher Education Commission should be a federal subject to promote quality education at higher levels.

Responding to a question during the question hour, Baligh-ur-Rehman said that only the Sindh Assembly had passed an Act on February, 6, 2013, to set up its own HEC at the provincial level.

The minister said HEC was role model federal organization which empowers equal and full participation of all provinces and universities in higher education policy making for national development.

He said the standard of higher education had improved significantly over the years due to innovative policies and reforms undertaken by the government. He said this year seven universities of Pakistan ranked amongst the top three hundred Asian universities against 5 universities last year.
