Mangla capacity enhancement project started

STAFF REPORT LHR: Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has taken up the Mangla Dam refurbishment project to enhance the generation capacity from 1,000 MW to 1310 MW.
Chairman WAPDA, Zafar Mahmood said while talking to media, “The energy shortfall challenge could only be addressed only if we establish new electricity generation resources as well as enrich the existing power plants. This Mangla Dam capacity enhancement project aims to cater the need of electricity production; WAPDA is committed to make sure timely completion of the project within the stipulated time”. The Mangla Dam refurbishment project costs Rs 52 billion and will be completed in three phases. A 310 MW generation capacity will be enhanced as a result of this project. In addition, the enhanced water capacity of the dam would provide about three million acre feet of additional water for irrigation apart from generating an extra 620 million units of low-cost electricity.
