STAFF REPORT IBD: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Project on Promotion of Olive Cultivation for Economic Development and Poverty Alleviation and National Institute for Genomics and Advanced Biotechnology (NIGAB).


According to the agreement, both the parties will establish research linkages for the project entitled ?Rapid Identification of Olive Cultivars using DNA Markers?. NIGAB is being outsourced for this task through Olive Promotion project.


The total cost is Rs 2.0 million for fingerprinting and variety identification of 2,000 olive plants. The whole project will be completed in a period of three months. The plant sampling for DNA extraction will be done from the olive orchards in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and FATA.


The varieties identification of 2,000 plant samples using Cp makers will be carried out at NIGAB Lab. The project is of national importance needed to develop mother orchards for further propagation.


Dr. Muhammad Munir, National Project Director (Olive Project) PARC and Dr. Ramzan Khan, Project Director (NIGAB) has signed this MoU at PARC (HQs) Islamabad whereas Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman PARC, Dr. Marco Marchetti, Itialian Expert, Dr. Shahid Masood, Member (PSD) and other senior PARC Scientists were present in the ceremony.
