Farming community should be encouraged by government and facilitate them to adopt innovative and latest technology of the time for minimizing post-harvest losses and maximizing production of agriculture, said Abdul Basit President Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

President LCCI stated that there are a number of reasons due to which the agriculture sector is suffering.

He emphasized on increasing area under cultivation because we are a shortage of per capita food availability.

The work force in a country that is dependent on agriculture is about 43% still the yield of major is 4X less than best producers like China and Egypt. He added that low yield is an important contributor to poverty and import of agriculture to feed its people.

This is revealing act for Pakistan that China produces 2X more cotton and wheat per hectare and Egypt produces 3X more rice and sugarcane per hectare than Pakistan.

Yield can be improved by following factors such as large-scale hybrid seed production, mechanization of farming like highly efficient irrigation systems, for example, drip irrigation and reduction in wastage of crop by introducing privately owned storage and cold storage facilities.

Biotechnology is the science of the 21st century and Pakistan has wonderful potential as emerging leaders in biotechnology but for the achievement of the goal private sector, scientists, researchers, and the government will have to work together.” he added.
