STAFF REPORT ISB: Pakistan Agricultural Research Councils Institute of Plant introduction (IPI) SARC Karachi and International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) have jointly arranged a Farmers Day for progressive farmers to demonstrate drip irrigation and solar pumping system technology at IPI farm located at Saleh Muhammad Village, Bin Qasim Landhi Karachi under the project titled “Watershed Rehabilitation and Irrigation Improvement in Pakistan”.

As many as 27 progressive farmers from different villages of Malir District (Sindh) attended this Farmers Day.

On this occasion, Fateh Khan Nizamani, Director (IPI) SARC-PARC/PI Watershed Rehabilitation and Irrigation Improvement in Pakistan, Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Consultant (ICARDA), Muhammad Saleem, Senior Engineer and other scientists delivered lectures to the farmers and stressed upon them to understand the critical situation of water availability and adoption of alternate energy sources in the agriculture sector especially the solar pumping system. The farmers witnessed on-site demonstration of drip irrigation system being used for vertical cultivation of Bitter gourd. They were also appraised about the cost and benefits of high efficiency irrigation system including solar pumping system, design, troubleshooting and its comparison with conventional irrigation systems.
