Staff Report ISB: The Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) has recommended as many as 8 high yielding maize varieties for cultivation in several environmental conditions.


A total of 11 new varieties were presented before Variety Evaluation Committee (VEC) which was chaired by Dr. Shahid Masood, Member Plant Sciences Division, PARC. The evaluation committee examined the varieties and approved 8 varieties which will be forwarded to seed council for final approval. The approved varieties include 10 hybrid varieties and 1 open pollinated (OP) variety.


Dr. Mian Abdul Majeed, National Coordinator Cereal System PARC, said, “It is the first-ever meeting of the VEC on maize since the beginning of PARC coordination system, I request the members to adopt soft evaluation criteria for proposals. “


Dr Shahid Masood, Chairman VEC advised the Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department (FSC7RD) to formulate the sub-committee in consultation with National Coordinator Cereal System PARC to devise the Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) for maize (hybrid and OP varieties) to use in maize VEC meetings in future.”


Muhammad Aslam Gill, Commissioner Food Security was also present amongst the participants. The new maize varieties are high yielding, disease resistant and adoptive to different ecologies.
