STAFF REPORT LHR: The Pakistan Council for Science and Technology has recently organized a one-day consultative workshop on Encouraging Problem-Solving Research in Lahore. Purpose of the event was to identify systemic bottlenecks which cause hindrances in creating an enabling environment for problem-solving research and development, innovation and commercialization in universities.
The event was organized in collaboration with the University of Management and Technology, Lahore.
Faculty members, representatives and experts from various universities, industries and research institutes from across Pakistan participated in the workshop. The event comprised three working sessions where the participants floated and discussed various recommendations with a focus on promoting and encouraging RandD culture in various development sectors.
Director ORIC UMT, in his augural address, stressed the need for promoting the culture of applied research in Pakistan. He said that appropriate frameworks for financing applied and problem-solving RandD are still missing which is the root cause of the problem.
Dr. Tariq Bashir, Head of Science Section, PCST, said that it is high time that RandD carried out in organizations and universities is directed towards industry, economy and society.
Dr. Hamid Malim, CEO Indus Pak Corporation, encouraged all the stakeholders to facilitate creation of an enabling environment.
Ch. Nazeer Hussain from HEC welcomed the suggestion for applied and problem-solving research and ensured that HEC is committed for promotion of applied research in Pakistan.
