Govt claims significant education improvement

STAFF REPORT BAHAWALPUR: The education system in the country has significantly been improved in the last few years as enrollment rate moved to 72 percent from 68 percent.
“All the provinces had increased their budget allocation for the education sector by around 10 to 15 percent,” said Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training M Balighur Rehman while addressing a gathering of a Pakistani community living in Germany.
He apprised the participants about the issues being faced by the nation and the steps taken by the present government to tackle those issues.
He said that the federal government was able to expand tax base from 8.5 percent of the GDP to 9.1pc but it has to be expanded further enabling the government to allocate more funds for the sector.
He added that around Rs70 billion had been allocated for higher education including research and development.
Links between the industry and the higher education institutions were being set up to improve the R&D industry, he said.
To a question about the capacity-building of teachers, the minister said that het National Assessment of Teachers have been carried out and in the light of the assessment, a strategy was being devised to train the teachers and make them more competent and efficient.
