STAFF REPORT KHI: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has said that a mobile testing lab for inspecting imported cell phones IMEIs, equipments quality and electromagnetic rays was the need of the time.

“All the suggestions for simplifying complex policies would be forwarded to the concerned ministry in order to provide relief to the traders,” said the Director Enforcement PTA during his recently visit to KCCI and KEDA.

On the occasion, he gave suggestions on various policies affecting the local businesses and to improve the process of Type Approval Certification of imported mobile phones so that it could be simplified to facilitate the traders.

He said that under the Telecom Act 1996 (section 29), no terminal equipment can be directly or indirectly connected with Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) unless it has been approved by the PTA.

Type approval granted by the PTA signifies that particular telecommunications equipment was approved for general sale and was suitable to connect with a specific public telecommunication network.

A sum of $100 is charged as fee for Type Approval for imported equipment and so far more than 300 companies from Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore have acquired Type Approval Certificates for various handsets and other equipment, he added.
