SAARC countries pledge to foster S&T cooperation

STAFF REPORT ISB: Pakistan entails a highly developed bioremediation system for water treatment purposes. It was recognized by South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries during the meeting at National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) on Pakistan Bioremediation Model, Prospects, and Replication in SAARC Countries”. Delegates from SAARC member countries including Afghanistan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh were present in the meeting.

Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) stressed while speaking to the delegates, “There are immense opportunities of cooperation amongst SAARC member states for improvement of agriculture sector. The exchange of techniques, capacity building, joint RandD ventures are few of the areas in agri sector in which cooperation could be taken to next level”.

The bioremediation site is established in NARC premises which is the outcome of intensive research of the scientists. This technique is being replicated in various parts of country for water treatment purpose and utilization of sewerage water for irrigation purposes.

Director Bio-Remediation Institute NARC, Dr Yousuf Riaz detailed the benefits of the system and its significance for water conservation. He said, “The bioremediation techniques involves the treatment of waste water and converts it into clean water that can be used for various purposes including irrigation of crops etc. This technique is pertinent to account for future water scarcity issues”.

The delegates showed keen interest in replication of bioremediation technique in their respective countries and urge Pakistan to assist in doing so.
