Solar lanterns of hope for rural women

Half billion people have no access to electricity and notorious climate changes are forcing countries to switch to renewable energy resources.

After the Sun set the blanket of darkness covers the district of Badin, rural women can switch on solar lantern of hope quitting darkness.

“The solar lantern has changed my life as I can work at night without fearing darkness and this helps me to earn enough money”, said Bathwater Mallah, 22-year-old, a resident of village Ismail Mallah.

Twenty-two villages of the union council Seerani received solar lanterns under the project called “Promoting Alternate Energy Solutions through Women Participation” initiated by Laar Environmental Awareness Forum in collaboration with LEAF Badin and also working with Small Grants and Ambassador’s Fund Program (SGAFP).

The projected started on Nov 16, 2016, and on July 12, 2017, was concluded. In his project 22 rural women groups were ordered and trained. Under the project 10 solar street lights mounted, solar lanterns given were 1,094 + to 547 UCs Seerani.

Nawaz Khatti, President of LEAF that solar lanterns are not only easy but can also help in their earnings by replacing 500 to 600 liters of kerosene oil and decreases carbon emission to the environment. Villagers can have the facility to charge their cell phones from lanterns without going to town market.

A large number of women, children and men attended that closing ceremony of the LEAF coming from different organizations and govt. officials and community members have also attended the ceremony.

A major topic of discussion on ceremony was results and effects of the project on women of the rural areas and stressed the need to continue the project of alternate energy in all villages of the district.
