Across Pakistan, there are numerous solar power plants with a capacity of generating 956.8 megawatts (MW) electricity are under development at twenty-eight various locations. Among these, at the end of 2018, few will add 556.5 MW power on completion.

Pakistan’s own resources are not enough to fulfill electricity needs although a big part of the country has no electric power supply and to fulfill its need, in fact, Pakistan is importing 100 MW of electricity from Iran and plans to increase this import to 3,000 MW.

In the current situation, Pakistan has stepped into solar power plants that make a significant stride in case energy crisis. To add 556.5 MW of electricity various large-scale solar power projects are started after Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) allotted 7 letters of support (LoS) and 17 letters of intent (LoIs) for solar power plants.

AEDB said that between December 2017 and March 2018 projects with 72.5 MW of capacity were funded by developers. Another solar photovoltaic (PV) projects adding 484 MW are expected to be functioning by the end of 2019.

Projects in the pipeline are two 50 MW projects be functioning in Nooriabad, Sindh by July 2018 and installation of another 50 MW project in Chakwal, Punjab which comes online by March 2018.

By the end of last year, Pakistan has installed 410 MW of solar capacity reported by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).Punjab the second largest province of Pakistan has installed rooftop solar power system on about 20,000 schools of rural areas.
