Zong takes lead in subscribers strength

STAFF REPORT IBD: Zong surpassed Warids subscriber base with a lead of over 250,000 subscribers in February 2012 making a total of around 15 million subscribers, reveals the fresh data of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.
After five years of its inception, Zong has now become a prominent part of the telecom Industry. Making slow and steady progress, Zong has made its mark in the saturated telecom market with starting from just one million subscribers.
Considering the latest stats, Zong has been leading the race for net subscriber acquisition since June 2008. In the 44 months since, Zong has acquired nearly 40 per cent of the markets new subscriber additions.
In other latest PTA statistics, the overall teledensity continues to be driven by the mobile teledensity. As of February 2012, the total teledensity has crossed 70.6 per cent, as the cellular mobile teledensity reached 67.2 per cent. The teledensity in fixed and wireless local loop remains unchanged at 1.8 and 1.6 per cent, respectively. The mobile subscriptions had reached 116.2 million as of February 2012.
It merits to mention here that due to the phenomena like multiple-SIM and mobile number portability, the active customers are believed to be somewhere between 70-80 per cent of total subscriptions.
