STAFF REPORT ISB: The government is set to launch a new vocational training programme to train workers in the textile industry over the five years as part of its measures to facilitate the knitwear industry and enhance exports.
Under the plan, initiated by the Ministry of Textile Industry, around 120,000 men and women would get training for skills required in garments and made-ups.
“The government has approved Textiles Package in Budget 2014-15 which included some important initiatives,” said an official of the ministry.
Under the facilitation plan, the official said drawback for local taxes and levies would be given to exporters of textile products on FOB values of their enhanced exports on an incremental basis if increased beyond 10pc over the last years exports.
Textile industry units in the value added sector would be provided Long Term Financing Facility (LTFF) for upgradation of technology from State Bank of Pakistan for 3-10 years duration.
It merits to mention here that the knitwear units registered with Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA) in 2005 were 1174 and 922 units were registered with PHMA during 2013-14.
The district wise knitwear exporting units registered with PHMA are Karachi 374 units, Lahore 160 units, Faisalabad 262 units and Sialkot 126 units.
