ISLAMABAD (May 25, 2017): The 2-day Media Workshop “Understanding Science” started on Thursday at Pakistan Museum of Natural History.

The Workshop was jointly organized by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) and National Press Club (NPC) Islamabad. Over 40 journalists from electronic and print media are participating in the workshop.

Dr. Shaukat Hameed, Coordinator General COMSTECH was the Chief Guest at Inaugural ceremony of the workshop. Chairman Pakistan Science Foundation Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, President National Press Club Mr. Shakeel Anjum, heads of science and technology organizations, office-bearers of NPC and a large number of journalists were present on this occasion.

The Chief Guest speaking on this occasion said that good education is imperative to understand science and without it we cannot make any headway in science or science communication. He said that for reporting on science activities the journalists must have some basic information about the working of the scientists and science and technology organization. He said that due to lack of media’s interest in science most of the developments in this field are not being properly projected.

Chairman PSF Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf in his address highlighted PSF’s initiatives for scientists and journalists for popularizing science in the country. He called upon journalists to play their role in highlighting science activities in the country for education of not only students but also on general public.

President National Press Club Mr. Shakeel Anjum and Member Science PSF Prof. Dr. Akram Sheikh others also spoke on this occasion.

In technical sessions on the first day the speakers who were senior journalists having both electronic and print media experience and training of journalists in their respective organization, in their talks focused on the basic principles and ethics for preparing good stories on science. The participants of the workshop were also provided information on natural sciences through visits to Pakistan Museum of Natural History’s display galleries and repositories.  The journalists will also be provided training in the filed on understanding on natural sciences, biodiversity and how Nature takes its course.
