MONITORING REPORT IBD: Three Iranian academic centres, including University of Science and Technology, University of Isfahan and University of Damghan, have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Pakistans COMSATS University in a bid to increase academic cooperation between the two neighbouring nations.

The agreements were signed during the two-day COMSATS conference held in Islamabad, which was attended by academicians and presidents of different universities that are the member of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).

Under these agreements, a number of activities including exchange programs for students and lecturers, holding of joint conferences and workshops and granting scholarships to brilliant students would be carried.

According to Mehdi Javanmard, the head of Inter-Islamic Network of Virtual Universities, Iran and Pakistan have always enjoyed strong ties in the educational sectors. Noting that earlier in 2002 the two countries ministries of science and technology signed an agreement to further increase academic cooperation.

He said that dozens of Pakistani students are now studying for Master degrees and PhD in Iranian universities, and that following the recent agreements the two nations would increase the number of scholarships for the graduate and under graduate students.
