STAFF REPORT ISB: An endophyte is an endosymbiont, often a bacterium or fungus, that lives within a plant for at least part of its life without causing apparent disease. Endophytes are ubiquitous and have been found in all the species of plants studied to date.
The endophytic fungus causing this serious mango post-harvest disease “Stem End Rot” (SER) that has become very well established in our older orchards located in Sindh province.
The disease has picked up the pace now and has become a major threat to the local mangoes.
Experts say that the symptoms of this disease only become visible when mango fruit is ripe, so it is a time to do something against this disease. However, from experience proves one can minimize the problem to a manageable extent
In order to prevent the disease, the experts suggest that farmers should prune the orchard trees as soon as harvest is done, remove or cut back all the terminals/branches at least 2-3 feet with sharp tools and take away all the debris out from the orchard.
