PARC - Group Photo  Wheat Traveling SeminarSTAFF REPORT KHI: The private sector should join hands with the public sector in order to achieve self-sufficiency in the agriculture sector on sustainable basis. Scientists and farmers should also work together in the field and use modern practices and resource conservation technologies to enhance wheat production in the country.

“Wheat research should be diverted towards the betterment of small farmers to ensure food security,” said Chairman, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad while addressing at the 2nd Session of National Traveling Wheat Seminar in the city.

He also highlighted the role of PARC in coordination and promotion of research on scientific basis particularly in the post-devolution scenario and stressed the need to focus on the areas which are doable and can be implemented.

Dr. Iftikhar stressed for effective coordination among national and international research partners such as CIMMYT, ICARDA, USDA and FAO for diseased free seed breeding particularly for small farmers.

He hoped with the adoption of recommendations of current seminar, the farming community can increase their farm production ultimately making Pakistan a food secured country.

Several national and international wheat experts, PARC scientists, agronomists, plant pathologists, plant protectionists, statisticians, policy makers, academia, private sector, service providers across the country participated in the seminar and shared their knowledge and experience.
