A WATER contaminant is a substance which is found in water that has the potential to pose a risk to public health at certain levels. Some contaminants occur naturally in the environment and seep into water sources through erosion. Unfortunately, many of the contaminants found in water are a result of human activities the industrial wastes from factories, refineries, mines and mills all contain harmful substances which can contaminate water sources. Agriculture also plays a part in the contamination of water. Many chemicals used in agriculture can leach into the water system. In terms of microbiological contaminants, many of them are found in human and animal biological waste. For this reason, water sources located too close to agricultural livestock may also become contaminated.


Water pollution is an imperative concern, due to the increasing use of contaminants such as fertilizers and pesticides and peoples tendency to use the water resource without any concern or consideration. Water pollution negatively impacts our drinking water, the animal habitat and wildlife, and our overall quality of life. Continuing to use water in this way will lead to contamination that will make the existence of clean water impossible.


Since water is capable of dissolving or suspending a tremendous variety of materials there is simply no way to get “pure” water (H2O and nothing but H2O) out of your faucet. All water, outside of a research laboratory, will have some other stuff in it. Even distilled water you purchase in plastic bottles at the store will eventually have some carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air dissolved in it forming a weak acid (carbonic acid), and worse, there will probably be some dissolved plastic molecules in it as well.


The primary and secondary regulations cover disinfectants, disinfectant byproducts, inorganic and organic chemicals and microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. These organisms need to be regulated because many of them are known to cause illness, mainly gastrointestinal problems. Disinfectants are commonly used in the treatment process to kill microorganisms that may be present in the water. The levels of these disinfectants in water need to be regulated because they can have harmful effects on human health or go through chemical reactions in the water to create byproducts. These byproducts can be harmful if consumed. Inorganic and organic chemicals must be reduced or eliminated from drinking water as most are unsuitable for human consumption.


Many of the naturally occurring compounds in water are benign or even good for our health. Some minerals, like calcium and magnesium are essential to human health, and some reports indicate that drinking water can provide a dietary source for these minerals.


The majority of the contaminants found in our drinking water can be traced back to improper or excessive use of ordinary compounds like lawn chemicals, gasoline, cleaning products and even prescription drugs. As a consumer, you might consider buying eco-friendly cleaners, avoid using toxic toiletries, and dispose of your medications properly. By doing your part in creating a less toxic environment, we will be able to create safer water for generations to come.


The benefits of bottled water are convenience and novelty. Instead of buying bottled water you can carry a canteen or a reusable athletic bottle. My personal favorite is to use a glass bottle and filter the water at home using a water filter. It is good for the environment and lowers the risk of chemical exposure such as BPA, a common toxic chemical in plastics. This change will save you a lot of money and will help the environment because water bottles are one of the major sources of plastic going into landfills today.


Drinking water must be free from components which may adversely affect the human health. Such components include minerals, organic substances and disease causing microorganisms.Poor water quality is responsible for the death of an estimated 5 million children in the developing countries. The problem is further aggravated by rapidly increasing population which results in poor water quality management.
