STAFF REPORT LHR: The continuous cold and dry weather across the country has badly affected the agriculture and livestock sectors and may result in significant decline in the production of crops, said experts.
“The prolonged cold weather would hit the expected production target of 64 million tons of sugarcane and 4 million tons of potatoes,” said Chairman Pakistan Agri-Forum, Ibrahim Moghul, while talking to the media.
He said that the cold weather had badly affected the crops and the set target of sugarcane production might come down to 62 million tons from the set target of 64 million tons, while potato production might witness a decline of 0.2-0.3 million tons from the set target.
Moghul continued that the weather was also harmful to the livestock sector and the fodder could not be properly maintained which would directly hit the overall production of poultry, dairy and other sub-products. The prolonged cold weather would also delay sowing maize and other crops.
However, he said that the only advantage of the cold weather was that it was beneficial to sunflower which might register some increase in output.
