STAFF REPORT IBD: President of ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF) Prof. Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro has been decorated with a prestigious Gold Medal by the University of Sindh in recognition of his contributions made in the field of science, technology and education.
The medal was awarded by the Pro-Chancellor of the University and Senior Sindh Minister for Education Nisar Khuhro at the universitys convocation. The citation of Prof. Manzoor Soomro was read on the occasion which highlighted his contributions in Pakistan and abroad.
Prof. Soomro has a brilliant academic and over 30 years of professional career. He is the pioneer scientist who had diagnosed the epidemic of banana burchy top virus (BBTV) disease that had destroyed banana crop in the country in early 1990s.
Dr. Soomro is also the pioneer Scientist who in 1989 had intercepted an exotic fungal disease – “Powdery Scab of Potato” in Potato Seed imported from the Netherlands. More studies were subsequently done on the problem by Dr. Soomro and his team.
Prof. Soomro also served FAO of UN for over 4 years, wherein, he launched a non-formal education programme for poor cotton farmers – “the Farmer Field School (FFS)”.
