Punjab University produces 180 PhDs this year

STAFF REPORT LHR: The 122nd convocation of the Punjab University has recently been held where 180 PhDs, 390 MPhil/MS, 343 Masters, 181 undergraduate degrees and 162 medals were distributed among the students.

As many as 75 medals were distributed among undergraduate students while 87 medals were distributed among Masters students. Total 1,256 degrees, medals and prizes were distributed during the convocation.

Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Mujahid Kamran presided over the convocation.

Addressing the ceremony, he urged the government to allocate maximum resources for education, especially for research and development.

This year, the Punjab University produced 180 PhDs, which was more than the PhD production of any university in a year in the country, he added.

Dr Mujahid Kamran said that average educational spending of nations was around 5 per cent of GDP while Pakistan is spending 2 per cent or less than 2 per cent of GDP on education. He said that total GDP of the US was $14 trillion while it was spending $980 billion only on education and spending a huge amount on research and development.

He said that Pakistans GDP stood around $250 billion while we were spending less than $5 billion on education and only 0.1 or 0.2 per cent on research and development. The VC said that a silent genocide of the Muslims was continuing.
