STAFF REPORT ISB: The Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) has launched Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) website with the aim to provide information for the solution of natural resources and environmental issues.


The initiative is an interdisciplinary effort of United Nations Education, Scientific And Cultural Organization (UNESCO), directed towards providing an opportunity for international cooperation.


“It has a focus for the coordination of related programme aimed at improving the management of natural resources and the environment,” said Director PMNH Muhammad Rafique while talking to the media here.


He said that PMNH has been declared the country secretariat of MAB-Pakistan, adding the website will be hosted by PMNH and Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF).


The MAB programme was launched in 1970s. The Biosphere Reserves are the areas designated under the UNESCO`s MAB programme to serve as places to test different approaches for integrated management of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine resources and biodiversity.


Pakistans National MAB Committee was reconstituted in 2012 to revive the programme while Secretary SandT was designated as chairman of the Committee and the PSF Chairman as its Co-Chairman. All the major stakeholders including representatives of UNESCO, IUCN are its members.
