STAFF REPORT ISB: President ECO Science Foundation Prof. Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro has participated in the second meeting of National Focal Points for EUs CBRN- Centres of Excellence (CoE) held recently at the Joint Research Centre site in Ispra- Italy.

The meeting constituted an important gathering at which representatives from different countries participating in the programme, came together to discuss and assess progress achieved in their respective regions and countries.

Aim of the course was to expose participants to some key concepts on the interactions between the scientific and policy-making communities, and to some contemporary international policy issues relating to science, technology, environment and health.

During the three-day meeting, presentations were given by representatives of the EC. There were a number of presentations given on progress in ongoing projects, as well as an overview of newly added projects. The second day was split into several regional round table meetings, whereas the third day gave the opportunity to discuss different thematic topics in the various Working Groups.

Some case studies were also presented and discussed which included the “Cold War” period science diplomacy, International Space Station, PEER Program, CERN, ICTP and SESAME etc.; wherein the staunch opponent countries have joined together around the global science projects and programmes.

The course proved to be very informative and a good opportunity to learn about the role of science in political diplomacy for a peaceful and prosperous world.
