STAFF REPORT ISB: Farm experts have emphasized for the use of certified wheat seed so as to increase wheat crop in the country and discouraging seed multiplication of banned varieties and urged the relevant department to should notify the banned varieties.

A two-day Annual Wheat Planning/Wheat Productivity Enhancement Programme (WPEP) meeting has recently been held in Islamabad and recommended the farmers to use certified wheat seed to increase wheat crop.

PARC Chairman Dr Iftikhar Ahmad, during the meeting, acknowledged the role of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other international agricultural development partners and provincial research institutions improving wheat productivity in Pakistan.

He suggested that progressive farmers should be invited in planning and technical meetings and other research and development activities for close coordination, exchange of new knowledge and innovations to boost up agricultural production in the country.

On the occasion, the scientists suggested the seed should be treated with some proper fungicide to control the karnal bunt.During the meeting, they decided the venue of the next planning meeting should be changed and duration should be three days instead of two days.Farmers should be trained to produce their own pure seed, ridge planting and bed planting in rice wheat and cotton wheat system to save the water and better management of balanced fertilizer, proper seed rate and irrigation.
