STAFF REPORT LHR: In the history of the Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT), Dr Ather Ashraf became the first PhD in Computer Science produced by the college.

He worked under the supervision of Dr Akram and Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar. The topic of his dissertation was “Spatial Fuzzy Intelligence System for Land Suitability Model.” In this research, the spatial surfaces of fertilizers were developed for wheat using a fuzzy decision support system.

The algorithm of the system takes soil nutrients and cropping time as input and generates a fertilizer surface using Fuzzy Logic. The analysis carried out in this research were only for irrigated wheat crop, however, they clearly show that the use of a fuzzy inference system in a Geographical Information System (GIS) can help identify the spatial patterns of the requirement of fertilizers for any crop.

Currently 38 students are registered in the PhD Computer Science and 135 in the MPhil programmes, making it perhaps the largest graduate program in computing in Pakistan. Almost 54 students have so far completed their MPhil degrees.
