Press Release: The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and the World Vegetable Center, AVRDC, on Wednesday kick started a joint project for production of seed and variety development of beans, particularly mungbean.


A subcontract for the project titled “Mungbean Filed Trials, Seed Production, Variety Development and Socio-Economic Studies” was signed here by Director General National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan and AVRDC Manager Grants and Partnership Development, Ms. Annelie Oberg on behalf of their respective organization.


Among others, NARC senior scientists including Dr. Muhammad Zubair, Dr. Shahid Riaz Malik, Shabbir A. Kalwar, M. Saleem Pomee, Dr. Pervaiz Khaliq and Dr. Mansab Ali from AVRDC were also present in the signing ceremony.


According to the agreement, both the organizations will work together and conduct research for the development of beans to help increase income of farmers and ensure overall socio-economic development of the country.


The project is aimed at improving farmer-preferred mungbean lines with increased resistance to viruses and bruchid pests, and resilience to environmental stresses available.


It would also help mungbean production technologies, increasing soil fertility and crop productivity in marginal areas and under salt stress developed.


The subcontract will uptake pathway for improved mungbean varieties and strengthen technologies while it will be utilized for research and development capacity of the project staff and extensions personnel and farmers.
