STAFF REPORT ISB: A round table talk on “The role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan’s commercial and industrial development” was held this week with the aim to assess the research, industrial needs and its impact on commercial development and economic uplifting of the country.


The meeting participants included Federal Minister Commerce, Khurram Dastgir Khan, Vice Chancellor QAU, Dr Javed Ashraf, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Aliya H. Khan, Chairperson, Department of Anthropology, Dr. Waheed Chaudhry, Chairperson Department of Sociology, Dr. Muhammad Zaman, Chairperson, Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Jamil Raza and Director School of Economics, Dr. Muhammad Idrees. The other participants included Deans of the faculties, Chairpersons of the departments and senior faculty member attended the round-table.


QAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Javed Ashraf while addressing the meeting said that university was contributing towards the goal of knowledge-based economic growth through its relevant research.


Khurram Dastgir Khan said, “The efforts of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) to bridge the academia-industry gap are highly commendable.” He assured full support to the QAU to foster the research according to industrial needs for the sake of economic development.”


Dr Shahid Hameed, Director Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), QAU, gave a presentation detailing the research projects of QAU which are of commercial importance that included functional energy materials for super capacitors, plasma-assisted sterilization, fuel cells, Li-ion batteries applications, synthesis of environmentally friendly leather, use of microbial lipases in detergents and indigenously produced enzymes for poultry use.


He said that linkages with industries including petroleum, leather, sugar, beverages, chemical, electronics and pharmaceutical industry had been established by QAU and valuable research interdisciplinary in accordance to industrial needs had been a prime focus of the university.


“We are also in a close liaison with chambers of commerce of different cities to understand the need of industry,” he added.
