Staff Report ISB: The much controversial Seed Amendment Bill 2015 got approved by Senate Committee. Earlier, the technical experts, agriculture scientists, nutritionists, medical practitioners, farmers, lawyers, and civil society had already stated their contentions on the said bill as it allows import and commercialization of genetically modified (GM) crops that have adverse impacts on human health and the environment. As per critics the law is approved despite severe resistance from relevant spheres only to pander a multinational GM seed manufacturing company due to personal interests of the lobby sitting in power corridors.

Senator Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, Chairman of the Senate committee promulgated the unanimous approval of the bill at end of the three hour long session.

Senator Muhammad Mohsin Khan Leghari was the only member who opposed the bill vehemently and expressed his deep concerns on allowance of import GM crops and their commercialization without laying down standard formulations and procedures to keep food security and other reservations of stakeholders intact.
