KARACHI: An empowered Halal Food Authority is being set up in the country to prevent products prepared with haram (forbidden) ingredients, informed the Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Rana Tanveer Hussain.


He was talking to media during his visit to the Pakistan Standard and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) Complex here Monday. The Minister further pointed out that the present government was seriously endeavoring for the provision of quality food items to the people.


He was of the view that in the past one month some 20 factories had been sealed during inspection in Karachi. The Minister further said that there were latest labs in the country where the food items were checked. He said that these labs would be upgraded further and that there would be no compromise on the quality of food products.


While praising the role of the PSQCA, the Minister directed that quality of products especially those of drinking water, oil and dairy products should be checked on daily basis. He was of the view that the provincial departments had also been asked to assist the PSQCA to help check the `substandard’ products.


To a question, the Minister said that agriculture was the backbone of the country’s economy and efforts would be made to check quality of tractors so as to provide quality agricultural equipments to the farmers.
