Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training on behalf of Prime Minister of Pakistan recently appointed Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry along with nine other eminent professionals as member of the ‘Commission’.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan as the Controlling Authority of Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan appointed 10 member ‘Commission’ of HEC.

The Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training on behalf of PM recently appointed Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry meritorious Professor and Dean Faculty of electrical, electronics and Computer Engineering, Mehran University of engineering & technology, Jamshoro along with nine other eminent professionals as member of HEC.

According to the HEC Ordinance/Act the ‘Commission’ is the highest policy and decision-making body of HEC. The powers of policy making decisions, approval of HEC budget and appointment of senior officials rests with this body of HEC.

This ‘Commission’ comprises of persons of international eminence and proven ability with significant contribution to higher education as teacher, researcher or administrator.

Dr. Sania Nishtar, Dr. Shams Kassim Lakha, Lt. Gen. (R) Muhammad Asghar, Dr. Naveed A Malik, Lt. Gen (R) Asif Mumtaz Sukhera, Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry, Prof. Dr. Javeid Iqbal, Engineer Ahmed Farooq Bazai, Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali, and Dr. Faisal Bari.

The ‘Commission’ formation

The ‘Commission’ consists of 18 members, including the HEC chairperson, secretaries from ministry of Education and Science and Technology, four nominees of the provincial governments, ten nominees from Prime Minister and Executive Director (ED) of HEC.

It is pertinent to mention that this position is not entitled to any salary or benefits for their services. It is merely a volunteer work for betterment of higher education in Pakistan.

This ‘Commission’ was dysfunctional for last two years due to incomplete quorum.

The HEC, is an independent, autonomous, and statutory institution of primary funding, overseeing, regulating, and accrediting the higher education institutions in Pakistan.
