MNS-UAM hosted a cotton mela to forge cotton market

Muhammad Nawaz Shareef University of Agriculture, Multan (MNS-UAM) organized a Cotton Mela on March, 2019 to formulate world cotton market, seeing that, Pakistan is the 4th largest cotton producer and 3rd largest cotton user in the world.

The ultimate aim of the festival is to endorse few key points that become the potential for the growing cotton market. Diverse speakers negotiate on the topics as under:

The first one to talk about is the ‘Cotton Planting Months’. In areas where farmers grow cotton as a cash crop, they naturally begin to sow cotton seed in the field as early as mid-March and finish planting by the end of June. As, there will be mostly dry season from July to October. 

To sown the crops there will be no issue of irrigation water during the crop season. After 3 years there’s a need of laser levelling and deep ploughing. To perk up better cotton, farmers must use certified seeds with seed treatment (insecticide and fungicide).

However, maximum efforts to complete sowing up to 15th May especially in upper Punjab ( Multan,  Sahiwal and Faisalabad divisions). Maximizing plant population 23 thousand plants in April sown crop and 35 thousand plants per acre in May sown crop discussed.

Keeping in mind, the cotton economy farmers not to stress of irrigation at peak flowring and boll formation from the month August –September. Similarly, no use of tank mixture.

Moreover, discussed the balance use of micro-nutrients NPK in the ratio of 2.5:1:1.  Less use of nitrogen at the initial stage of crop and in the beginning of crop use of soft insecticides and clean picking.
