From Afghanistan to KPK, locusts set off through Pakistan. The desert locust situation in Pakistan was already swiftly worsening and now swarms have discovered a new gateway from Afghanistan to attack agricultural fields in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Some crop losses have been detected and reported in several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and specifically in district Dera Ismail Khan, from where these desert locust swarms were entering Punjab consequently imposing a serious threat to the food resources of the country.

The minister for National Food Security and Research, Syed Fakhr Imam, while finishing up the debate on desert locusts swarms in the National Assembly, said that the government was well aware on the movement of swarms of desert locusts will be entering Pakistan from four countries: Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti via Saudi Arabia, Iran and Yemen.

Syed Fakhr Imam predicted that new swarms of desert locusts would enter Balochistan from Iran within the next two weeks, he further added that the province was already in very much famaliar with the crisis and it was the worst hit with its 33 districts already attacked by insects.

Fakhr sai that in Balochistan the ground operation against these desert locusts had been carried out over 85,000 hectares by ground teams and he also mentioned that the aerial sprays had also been carried out over 500 hectares eradicate these locusts immediately.
