Huawei Mate 40 & Mate 40 Pro Rumored To Sport Custom 108MP Sensor

Huawei is expected to unveil the new Mate 40 smartphone in October this year. Recently, we came across some leaks revealing details about these upcoming flagship smartphones.

Huawei Mate 40 & Mate 40 Pro Rumored To Sport Custom 108MP Sensor

As per the latest rumor, the upcoming Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro will come equipped with a 108MP sensor as the primary camera.

There are already a few 108MP camera smartphones including the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Motorola Edge+ available in the market. However, the Huawei Mate 40 lineup will be featuring a customized 108MP sensor with free-form lens. The custom 108MP sensor is most likely being developed by Huawei in partnership with Leica.

Huawei Mate 40 series will use 108MP primary camera

The free-form lens should help in minimizing the distortions on this larger sensor. While we have seen free-form lenses in the form of third-party add-ons for smartphones, the Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro will be the first smartphones to come with built-in free-form lens.

In addition, the transition is happening slowly from the 6P lens to the 7P lens in the premium segment. Coming to Huawei’s 108MP sensor, the source mentioned that it will feature 9P lens. With more lenses, it should offer improved clarity over the currently used 108MP sensors.

Is this the first smartphone with 9P lens?

As of now, there is no information about the other camera sensors on the Mate 40 smartphones. Even the earlier launched Huawei flagship smartphones came with custom camera sensors. Huawei has been using a custom RYYB sensor instead of a standard RGB sensor starting with the P30 series.

Huawei claims the RYYB sensor will allow more light to pass through, resulting in better low-light photography. An earlier leak revealed the Mate 40 series to sport an all-new Kirin 1020 chipset. Moreover, it is mentioned to be built on TSMC’s 5nm node. While TSMC can no longer produce new Kirin chipsets for Huawei, it can fulfill the previous orders by September 14th.

The new Kirin 1020 will be the successor to the Kirin 990 used on Huawei P40 and P40 Pro smartphones. If the US ban continues, the upcoming Mate 40 smartphones will also be coming without Google Play Services. With no support for Google apps, it will be hard for Huawei to sell smartphones even with incredible cameras.

With Google getting ready to release Android 11 in the next few months, the Huawei Mate 40 lineup could launch with the latest version of Android. The company might also introduce 40W wireless charging technology across all of the Mate 40 variants. Currently, the super fast wireless charging is limited to the Huawei P40 Pro+ smartphone.
