An LGBTQ+ organization in the area has received a grant that will help tackle advocacy and education using technology.

The Onslow County LGBTQ+ Community Center recently received a technology grant to help connect clients to resources after being forced online amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grant from LGBT Technology and PowerOn has provided the organization with a desktop computer, two laptops, a tablet and a new printer. Director Dennis Baincuzzo says the equipment will help the center’s staff in providing access to healthcare, employment and housing, while also helping other community organizations with Safe Zone Training.

According to Baincuzzo, connecting the LGBTQ+ community in rural areas has been hard during the pandemic.

“LGBTQ people have a problem connecting to resources, so with the technology, it makes it easier for them to connect to the resources they may need, to each other, and to communities outside of our own,” Baincuzzo said, “so that they can begin to have conversations and positive experiences in their lives.”

The director adds that the technology will be essential in advancing many of the center’s programs.
