Should Tesla be worried?

Last year, Lucid Motors lifted the wraps off the Air, an electric luxury sedan boasting over 500 miles of range, impressive performance, and lightning-fast charge times.

But Lucid isn’t the only US startup company that wants to shake up the EV industry. One year ago, Fisker revealed a prototype of the upcoming Ocean SUV that could pose a significant threat to the Tesla Model Y. We still have to wait until May for the production Fisker Ocean to debut at the 2021 LA Auto Show, but in the meantime, Fisker has shared new details about the electric SUV’s advanced technology and driver assists.

The Architecture will also support a multitude of sensors including a digital imaging radar and high-resolution cameras supporting driver assists with high levels of autonomy, and advanced cybersecurity.

The Ocean SUV will be the first model to support Fisker’s Intelligent Pilot technology when it launches in Q4, 2022.

“Expanding from an EV platform sharing, complete vehicle engineering and manufacturing cooperation to collaboration on a full ADAS system demonstrates the breadth of capabilities Magna can deliver to help customers meet their goals,” said Swamy Kotagiri, Magna CEO.

“It’s a collaboration that delivers scale and efficiency, while also contributing several advanced vehicle technologies to respond quickly to the evolving new mobility ecosystem.”

Initially, the Fisker Ocean will be manufactured by Magna in Europe and will use a modified version of an EV platform developed by Magna called the FM29 platform.

Technical details still haven’t been announced, but the Ocean is expected to utilize two electric motors and an 80-kWh lithium-ion battery pack providing a driving range of between 250 and 300 miles.

We’ll have to wait and see if Fisker’s touted technology is as advanced as the startup company claims, but the Ocean could offer another advantage over the Tesla as it’s expected to sell for $37,499, undercutting the Model Y.
