Federal Minister For S&T Chaudhry Fawad Hussain Laid The Foundation-Stone Of Islamabad Space Observatory At Shakarparian Islamabad On Monday. Ministry of Science and Technology (S&T) Secretary Dr. Arshad Mahmood, Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) Chairman Prof. Dr. Shahid Mahmood Baig and Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) Member Finance Rana Shakeel along with other dignitaries were also present on this occasion.
Speaking on this occasion the Minister said that the establishment of the observatory was aimed at addressing the issue of moon sighting on the occasions of Ramadan, Eidul Fitre, Eidul Azha and Muharramul Haram so that the entire nation can observe these religious events with complete harmony and unity. He said the facility will also help in scientific research, formal and informal science education as well as educating the youth on astronomy and related phenomena of space science. The Minister said that it will impart knowledge based entertainment to students and general public.
He said that the government will establish a fully synchronized space museum/planetarium/observatory to strengthen the scientific research infrastructure in the country. The Minister said that the government was planning to establish another institution on the pattern of SUPARCO to strengthen space research in the country.
Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad welcomed and appreciated the efforts of Ministry of Science and Technology and Pakistan Science Foundation for assisting the Ruet Committee through use of latest technology on scientific basis. He said that the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will work in complete coordination with the Ministry of Science and Technology.
PSF Chairman speaking on the occasion highlighted the Foundation’s programmes of research funding and science popularization. He said that PSF within its resources was making all out efforts to strengthen R&D activities in the country for achieving self-reliance in S&T. CDA Chairman also addressed the audience on this occasion.
