Japanese supercomputer Fugaku still world's fastest by wide margin

Japanese supercomputer Fugaku, jointly developed by the government-backed Riken research institute and Fujitsu Ltd., has retained four major titles in the world supercomputers performance rankings.

The world performance tables are updated twice a year in June and November, and the latest ranking was announced on June 28. Fugaku has now held on to the top spots for three ratings cycles, starting in June 2020.

According to Riken, Fugaku made some 442 quadrillion calculations per second in the Top500 category, in which supercomputers compete on simple calculation speed — about three times faster than the second-ranked U.S. supercomputer.

“Fugaku’s world-class advancement in a wide range of fields has been shown,” commented Satoshi Matsuoka, director at the Riken Center for Computational Science. “We will develop it yet further.”
