PAK-UK Gateway

Through this initiative, and after a year-long international peer review, only eight projects made to the final award out of a huge number of submissions. IIUI is among those eight, which got awarded under the Pak-UK Gateway program in 2021.

The IIUI team comprising of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Shuja Syed, Founding Executive Director of CAEPE/ Vice President Research and Enterprise and Dr. Imran Murtaza, Associate Professor, Department of Physics and Affiliate Researcher of the Centre for Advanced Electronics & Photovoltaic Engineering (CAEPE) through their project on “Advanced Energy Harvesters and Energy Storage Devices for Self-powered Flexible Energy Systems” has partnered with the University of West Scotland, University of Glasgow and an Oxford based company named as Lightricity that won a funding of over PKR 100 million for a period of three years.
The team members were invited to show case the progress of their ongoing project to the President of Pakistan and IIUI Chancellor, H.E. Dr. Arif Alvi and other dignitaries at the President house. The team members briefed the President about the project and achievements during the first year of the project. The worthy President showed keen interest in the project and termed it as the necessity of the day. The ceremony was also attended by the Federal Minister of Education, Executive Director HEC, British High Commissioner in Pakistan, CEO of British Council Global, Vice Chancellors, Senior officials from the HEC, Ministry of Education and British Council and awardees of the ICRG. Prof. Dr. Masoom Yasinzai, Rector IIUI was also present on the occasion.
The project is focused to investigate the Advanced Energy Harvesters and Energy Storage Devices for Self-powered Flexible Energy Systems. The project is aimed to engineer the Energy harvesters and develop the Self-charging power packs with the potential to revolutionize wearable technology. This new technology is well-aligned with the energy priority area of both Pakistan and the UK and will enable to enhance and improve the performance of current technology such as health, environment and food quality monitoring, smart cities and buildings, transportation, sport activities, space expeditions and military devices.
The British Council and Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan has launched a joint programme called “Pak-UK Education Gateway”, which aims to enhance partnership between the higher education sectors of Pakistan and the UK. Innovative and collaborative research in emerging disciplines of knowledge e.g., energy generation and storage, medical and allied health sciences, climate change, artificial intelligence, robotics and many more, is one of key areas of collaboration under this umbrella framework. This includes providing technical assistance for the establishment of centres of excellence for critically needed fields of education identified in HEC Vision 2025.
Innovative and Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports research partnerships between Pakistani and UK universities, research bodies and existing centers of excellence that focus on the emerging disciplines/priority areas. Through this initiative, and after a year-long international peer review, only eight projects made to the final award out of a huge number of submissions. IIUI is among those eight, which got awarded under the Pak-UK Gateway program in 2021.
H.E. Dr. Hathal bin Homoud Alotaibi, President IIUI lauded the achievements of team IIUI and desired to see the outcome of this highly specialized scientific work in form of an innovation.
