Among Panerai launches at Watches and Wonders in Geneva last month were a pair of models that perpetuate two of the brand’s signature calling cards: it is the watch of adventure; and it is leading the charge toward environmentally sustainable watchmaking.

The Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro e-Steel PAM1288. PANERAI First the adventure, in the form of a rare complication, a perpetual calendar in the Luminor collection, the Goldtech Calendario Perpetuo PAM1269, which comes with a trip to Florence, where Panerai was founded.

Each of the 33 customers who buy one of the limited editions will be invited on a cultural and gastronomical trip to Florence and the surrounding Tuscan countryside to participate in cultural activities and historical tours. Buyers will also receive access to an exclusive NFT created by an artist for the occasion. Previous Panerai adventures attached the purchase of watches have included a training experience with the Royal Italian Navy, rock climbing in the Grand Tetons with Jimmy Chin, and an expedition to the Arctic. This one appears to be a little bit less hard core.

The watch is made of Goldtech, Panerai’s proprietary gold alloy that includes platinum to make it stronger and a dash of copper to give it a rosy glow. The movement, Panerai P.4100 is a perpetual calendar – with day, date, month, year and leap year (month, year and leap year are visible on the caseback) – as well as a GMT, with a second time zone on the main dial. Bonus: instead of using a series of correctors, the perpetual calendar functions are adjusted via the crown.

IAs for the environment, Panerai has launched a new Submersible QuarantaQuattro e-Steel, made of recycled steel. The company introduced the eco-friendly metal last year to its Luminor Marina collection, and this year it appears in the Submersible line. e-Steel, made from recycled materials, has the same properties, chemical behavior, strengh and resistance to corrosion as new steel. The new line is called QuarantaQuattro on account of the 44mm case. It comes with a gradient gray, green or blue dial, and for the first time on a Panerai watch, a ceramic bezel. It is water-resistant to 300 meters. The strap is made of recycled PET or recycled rubber, another reason to feel warm and fuzzy about buying the watch.
