In Pakistan, a good number of women are working professionally in various fields of nuclear science and technology including medicine and health care, agriculture and biotechnology, energy and radiation applications, regulatory bodies, industry and R&D organizations.

One-day Seminar on Women in Nuclear Science & Technology

Many of them have made notable contributions in respective fields of their expertise but little is known about their achievements. Due to nature of their work as well as the social setup in our society, they have a little interaction among themselves. Therefore, Pakistan Nuclear Society (PNS) has planned to provide them a forum for exchange of information, mutual discussions as well as to urge and generate interest among young ladies to adopt careers in nuclear sciences, technology and engineering.This in accordance with the mandate of PNS for awareness and understanding of general public about the benefits of nuclear S&T for socio-economic development; thereby enhancing the quality of life in the country. Accordingly, a joint seminar was held at the National Institute of Bio-technology and Genetic EngineeringNIBGE), Faisalabad on 1st August, 2022 with the cooperation of Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

Through this seminar, lifelong knowledge of experienced scientists, engineers and medical doctors, who have been involved in the applications of nuclear techniques in agriculture, industry, medicine, environment, hydrology, safety & security, etc. in different national and international organizations disseminated and updatedstate-of-the-art information which were beneficial especially for the young scientists and engineers in respective fields. The motivation and guidance will contribute in the development of their research careers. Prof. Dr. Rubina Farooq, T.I, Vice Chancellor, Govt. College Women University, Faisalabad was the chief guest in the opening ceremony of the seminar. More than 100 scientists, researchers, teachers and students from different organizations and academic institutions participated. After recitation from the Holy Quran, Dr. Shahid Mansoor, S.I, Chief Scientist /Director, NIBGE Faisalabad gave the welcome address. He thanked the speakers and PNS Council Members for travelling to Faisalabad and organizing this unique activity. Seminar introduction was presented by Dr. Uzma Maqbool, DCS, Head ASD, NIAB Faisalabad. Dr. Muhammad Tahir Khaleeq, President PNS elaborated PNS objectives, programmes and activities. He urged the participants to becomemembers of PNS and contribute in its academic S&T activities. He thanked Director NIBGE and appreciated the efforts of, Dr. Uzma Maqbool and Dr. Samina Iqbal for all the arrangements of the seminar. Mr. Waqar Ahmad Butt, Executive Member PNS recalled the contribution of women in S&T and their active participation in national programmes.

He also mentioned about the ‘International Conference on the Applications of Nuclear Techniques for Socio-economic Development’ which will be organized by PNS from 24-26 October 2022 in Islamabad and encouraged the participants to actively take part in it by presenting papers and posters. The Chief Guest, Dr. Rubina Farooq, a dynamic and learned academician expressed her views about various initiatives taken at the Women University Faisalabad. It is commendable that the university has flourished in a short span of time under her leadership. She appreciated the initiative taken by PNS and NIBGE for holding this seminar and supported the continuations of such activities. In the academic session which was exclusively for ladies, Dr. Saeeda Asghar, Former DG NM&O & Advisor to the chairman PAEC very nicely elaborated “A Journey from WIN global to WIN Pakistan”. Dr. Rakhshanda Bilal, Former DDG BRC, DESTO Karachi & DG (Technical), Chairman Secretariat, PAEC HQrs presented a detailed account of “Isotopic Techniques in Life Science Research”. Ms. Abida Khatoon, Former Director PNRA and Safety Specialist at IAEA (Vienna) recalled her memories and gave an overview of the “Women in Nuclear all around the World”. Dr. Saira Butt, Head, Isotope Application Division (IAD), PINSTECH expressed her experience in the “Applications of Nuclear Techniques in Hydrology, Environment & Industry”. The presentation of Ms. Nazneen Kausar, DCE, Head Electronics Division (ED) PINSTECH was on “The role of Nuclear Instruments in our life”. Dr. Faiza Zareen, a Cupping Therapist/Vice President Labbaik cancer care gave a fruitful talk on “Hijama: The Sunnah Treatment”. The seminar ended with a very useful question/answer session. And finally, Dr, Samina Iqbal presented the vote of thanks.
